PLAIN: Chile seminar a success – hope for more in other countries

PLAIN was pleased to sponsor the first international seminar on plain language on Thursday, July 26 in Santiago, Chile. Held in the Bicentennial auditorium of the Chilean Interior Ministry, the seminar was attended by 270 people. Organized by the Chilean Transparency Council, the PUCV and the Chilean Plain Language Network, the seminar featured speakers from the Chilean branch of Transparency International and the Chilean Plain Language Network, as well as international experts.

Dr Neil James of the Plain English Foundation was keynote speaker and gave a talk titled “The future is clear.” Neil’s talk was in English with simultaneous interpretation into Spanish. Current PLAIN President Joanna Richardson gave a talk in Spanish on “PLAIN: working in a network.”

This event was the first one that PLAIN has supported which was in a language other than English. With the resounding success of the seminar in Chile, PLAIN hopes that this will be the first of many more, reflecting PLAIN’s international membership.
